Yuni In Taxco – Yuni In Taxco EP (2010)

  • New Weird America
  • Indie folk
  • Doo wop
  • Sunshine pop
  • Dream folk
  • Psych-rock
  • Alt-folk
  • Folk indie
  • Free folk

Comment: this 4-track outing (clocking in at a 12-minute) is a dodge into the discography of Portuguese imprint Cakes And Tapes Records from the year of 2010 which still did reflect upon the influence of the so-called New Weird movement and on the other side it goes even more backward in time to such experimental psychedelic rock combos as Spacemen 3, Spiritualized, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, and glittering sunshine pop and doo wop harmonies from the 60s. In the first place, those occasionally loaded effervescent vocal appearances and fast changes in mood and structure remind of Panda Bear and Animal Collective and it is a blissful reverberation over the place by the Seattle-based combo. Strumming guitars and shuffly drumming are backed up by artsy electronics and woodwind instruments. And as we would see 4-5 years later Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper was produced by Sonic Boom. In a word, it is a decent issue which is very worth to be remembered even 9 years after the release. It is for your own sake to enjoy a true example of beauty in the middle of a vanity fair and chaos.

Horrible Present - 54, I Love You But It`s Time To Get Off (2012)

9.3

/Post-punk, Psychedelia, DIY, Experimental indie, Drone pop, Alternative, Lo-fi, Jangle pop/

Comment: this 10-piece issue seems to work without a hitch being mainly inspired by the 80s and 90s British post punk developments, uncompromising and innovative indie outlets, peripheral folk and psychedelic scene. All these endeavours are adorned with the hirsute DIY aesthetics and lo-fi outlines. The project`s sound based on chiming guitars, moody vocal lines, surging organ drones, some programmed rhythms used to be refreshing and nostalgic at the same time. Indeed, the album seems to be perfectly consistent with the likes of The Jesus & Mary Chain, early Primal Scream, Dub Sex, The Pastels, Spiritualized, Field Mice, Clinic, some The Slumberland-related projects etc.

Lizard Kisses - Tiny Island Teeth (2011)

/Alt-folk, Dream folk, Indie folk, Americana, Folk indie, Baroque folk, Experimental indie, Art pop, New Weird America/

Comment: heck, my heart got broken once again...they made it again...indeed, once again listening to this Brooklyn-based girl-boy ensemble I got profoundly bewitched and satisfied with those bottomless bittersweet feelings and stings in the chest. More detailly, Cory Siegler & Marc Merza`s sound is filled with austere soundscape yet it is so fantastically accentuated and spiced out with other segments (found sounds, Balkan music themes, theremin-afforded screeches) that this makes your day. By the way, this time the duo is assisted by a handful of contributors. One of the best issues of 2011 so far (where are the reviews by Pitchfork, Drowned In Sound and other such sort of juggernauts?).

Fletcher Kaufman - House of Glass Dolls (2011)

/Alt-folk, DIY, Lo-fi, Anti-folk, Electronic, Singer-songwriter/

Comment: Fletcher Kaufman is a singer-songwriter from USA and House of Glass Dolls is his debut album (in two versions). By listening and concluding it I can admit that Kaufman`s sound can be considered as one of those ones being part of DIY/anti-folk culture /CLLCT, for instance). Bare, rough guitar strums are accompanied with simple, barking cadences and at times female vocals in the background. On the other side, West Chron has strong electronic appeal with autotuned vocals, Grasping Love used to exploit Jewish motives. You can compare his sound with the oeuvres by Adrian Aardvark, and tinyfolk.
